Discover Tulum

Tulum is the Riviera Maya's true gem. Its long isolated beaches seem to be taken out of a fairytale: powdery white sand and a calm sea whose turquoise waters are a delight to the senses. This along with its candlelit ecological petit hotels, absence of grand tourism resorts, and a population in search of a laidback lifestyle, are this earthly paradise's charm.

Tulum's magic begins in its archeological site -built on a cliff in front of the Caribbean sea by the Mayan civilization -and continues touching its hundreds of cenotes and underground caves, its extensive jungle, its skies decorated with luminous sunrises and sunsets, and the magical habitat of Sian ka'an Biosphere where, according to the Mayans, "the sky is born".
Besides the hotel zone -which begins south of the archeological site and ends at the Biosphere's entrance- the town of Tulum is also an important area featuring various restaurants, grocery stores, car rental agencies, and a few more small hotels. This commercial presence has brought job opportunities, better infrastructure, more ecological awareness, and has incited a united community with a collective goal: to protect their paradise which is sometimes threatened by the growth wave that usually arrives to any touristic destination.

Tulum's location is idyllic. It is within close reach of Yucatan's main attractions: the splendid archeological sites of Ek-balam and Chichen Itzá, the colonial city of Valladolid, and Mérida, the state's capital. It is also located just a few kilometers away from Macario Gómez and Francisco Hu May, two small villages that result the right places to go shopping for local handcrafts, and to get a taste of real Mexican folklore.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES IN TULUM
During your stay with us it will be a pleasure to provide you with information on where to go and what to do. At no additional cost we will gladly reserve all the tours and activities you decide to perform during your vacation.

OPEN WATER DIVING
Tulum's Caribbean waters are decorated with the Great Mayan Reef, the second largest coral reef in the world after Australia's. It is born in Cabo Catoche, Quintana Roo and extends 1,000 kilometers south bordering the coasts of Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. Its vast array of marine life makes it a superb scenario for open water diving, therefore making the area an ideal place to explore such a colorful submarine world.

CAVE AND CAVERN DIVING
Cenotes were sacred among the Mayan civilization, and today lay intact to be discovered through cave and cavern diving. Even though this is a sport that requires a much more specific preparation, it is definitely worth exploring the depths of these water wells surrounded by jungle. The rock formations -stalactites and stalagmites - that decor their walls create caverns with long tunnels also explored through cavern diving. Tulum and its surroundings are the only place in the world featuring such natural treasures.

KITEBOARDING
Kiteboarding is the latest water sport practiced on Tulum's beaches due to the fact that the area offers excellent wind conditions from October through May. The coast is, in fact, a kiteboarders paradise due to its crystal clear waters, wide beaches, and sunny days. Playa del Carmen, located 60 kilometers north of Tulum, is home to Mexico's first kiteboarding school, where professional instruction and gear are available year round (courses only during wind season).

FISHING
The Caribbean is one of Mexico's main fishing destinations due to the huge amount of fish that swirl in its waters. Sail Fish, Blue Marlin, Dorado, and Barracuda are among the most popular species in the area, where a considerable amount of specialized companies offer fishing tours.

TULUM'S ATTRACTIONS

ARCHEOLOGY
The Mayan civilization was one of the most important prehispanic cultures of America, and the archeological sites located along the Riviera Maya and its surroundings were the base of its flourishment. Tulum, Cobá, Ek-balam, and Chichen Itzá are some of the most important vestiges built by the Mayan culture, and because of their proximity to the area they are worth visiting in order to discover their majestic pyramids, plazas, temples, and ball games.

REEF
The Grand Mayan Reef, the second largest coral reef in the world, is a colorful scenario overflowing with exotic marine life that can be explored through scuba diving and snorkeling. Tulum is one of the best spots along the Riviera Maya where to enjoy such exciting sports.

CENOTES
Tulum is home to the largest cave system in the world - Ox Bel Ha. These caves, and the caverns to which they lead to, originate in cenotes, sweet water pools filled with crystal clear water and surrounded by jungle where millenary rock formations - stalagmites and stalactites - can be observed. Cenote dipping and cave and cavern diving are unique activities that can only be practiced in this area of Mexico.

WILDLIFE
The area's perimeter is surrounded by vast green tropical jungle, which makes it a coast filled with life and color. Pelicans, Albatross, and Fishing Eagles fly through its skies, Moreleti crocodiles swim in its lagoons, spider monkeys play on its trees, and an immense amount of multicolored fish swim in its ocean. Tulum's air, water, and earth are a tribute to nature's majestuosity.
